The Foundations of Nursing and Critical Thinking course looks at nursing as an art and a science with the primary goal being the promotion of the quality of life throughout the life cycle as it relates to the individual. This course is designed on theoretical bases and strategies for adaptation through health promotion. The student will learn to utilize critical thinking skills in the application of nursing theory to the practice of professional nursing and to the nursing process. Introductory content covers such topics as the health care system, communication, nursing processes, client teaching, documentation, and discharge planning. Topics such as HIPAA, communicable diseases, pain management, and bioterrorism are also discussed. Historical nursing perspectives, legal and ethical standards for nursing practice will also be explored.
